LOCKPORT —
The Kenan Arts Council’s familiar and cherished holiday gift show unfolds this weekend at the Kenan House and grounds.
The 31st annual show, in progress Friday through Sunday, features the handmade works of 48 artisans for sale in William Kenan’s transformed mansion, carriage house/Taylor Theater and Education Annex.
In addition, the arts council is holding a gift basket raffle, the Kenan Quilters Guild is raffling an exquisite quilt and the Shamus Restaurant is operating a cafe in the Kenan greenhouse.
Once again, the arts council’s homemade holiday “goody” booth and Kenan Herb Club’s gifts-from-the-garden booth are sharing the stage in Taylor Theater.
In short, the show is pretty much the same as it was last year, and many years before that.
“Why mess with success?” new show co-chairman Jane Corser wonders.
“All the favorites are included as they should be. It’s been a successful show, so we don’t try to reinvent the wheel,” she said.
The holiday gift show traditionally is as much a treat for the senses as a place to find one-of-a-kind gifts for family, friends and self. In and between the three buildings, holiday music soothes the ears while the Christmas decorations dazzle the eyes.
Corser is showing her arty side in the trimming of the tree in the Kenan House foyer; the decorations consist mostly of dried flowers.
Necessity was the mother of invention, she says modestly. The arts council’s supply of trimmings was running low, so she looked around the Kenan campus for inspiration.
“The hydrangeas were absolutely beautiful this year; three trees were loaded with blooms, and the idea just came to us: hydrangeas and lights,” she said. “My friend and I have been gluing and glittering, spraying. ... It ought to be interesting.”
The arts council admitted 48 artisans and crafters to the annual show on a juried basis. Alongside returning favorites, six new crafters are setting up shop including Buffalo-area jewelry maker Anne Bliss, who sets heirloom-quality pearls in unique designs and provides a velvet pouch for each piece.
Art therapist Katie Foley is bringing molded pottery.
Sandra Hamann has colorful, seasonal quilted wall hangings and table runners.
Ronna Mink shapes clay into “dazzling” standalone art pieces.
Sandra Starbird’s contemporary metal wall art, displayed at the 2011 Buffalo Show House, will be up for grabs.
Lisa Wroblewski of Wilson is bringing fabric bags in all shapes and sizes.
Their works will add to the A-to-Z list of materials in use and wares for sale at the show. Fabrics, metals, wood, glass, clay, stones, beads, paper, flowers, sugar and fruits: They’re the stuff of jewelry, clothing, accessories, furniture, year-round and seasonal decor, greeting cards and stationery, candles, bath and body products, jams, jellies and more, in all price ranges.
KAC’s basket raffle consists of themed bundles of gifts and gift cards valued between $200 and $400. Themes include Male Box, Yard and Garden, Ladies Delight, Made in America, This and That and “Whine a Little, You’ll Feel Better” featuring 12 bottles off the Niagara Wine Trail.
Visitors are encouraged to bring along food donations for area food pantries. Collection barrels will be set up at the entrances to Kenan House and Taylor Theater.
The show will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Kenan campus, 433 Locust St. Admission costs $3 per person.
Show proceeds are earmarked for Kenan Center programs, the Arts Council’s scholarship fund and its grant fund for area schools.
Chairing the show with Corser are council members Manning McCandlish and Barbara Hollasch.
