Lakemen return with experience, optimism in 2012

Wilson opens its grid season at 7 p.m. tonight at Gowanda.

NEWFANE —  

A large core of returning starters are featured this season on the 24-player Wilson Lakemen varsity football roster.
Head coach Bill Atlas returns for his sixth season at the helm in Wilson, where the team finished 2011 with a Section VI Class C North record of 1-4.
The Lakemen will open their Section VI slate at 7 p.m. today at Gowanda.
Key losses to graduation include Cam Sidote and Pat Walch.
Among the many key returners for the Lakemen include senior running back Justin Slango, who rushed for 492 yards on 102 carries last season.
Also back is fleet-footed senior wide receiver Tayler Thilke, who finished 2011 with 11 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns.
On the line, the black and orange feature size and strength in senior nose tackle and tight end Geoffrey Lort, senior left tackle and linebacker Mike Burt, junior guard, defensive tackle Tyler Hedley and junior defensive end and tight end Kevin Daunce.
“I'm very excited about the season. I've got a good group of experienced players. Our goal this year is the playoffs,” coach Atlas said.
Out with injuries early in the season are senior offensive lineman and linebacker Steve Szuba and senior wide receiver and defensive back Nickolas Bell.
Atlas is assisted on the Wilson bench by Jeff Murphy and Allan Scarpine.
