H.S. sports practices begin Monday

Local high school football and soccer players hit the fields on Monday

LOCKPORT — The wide open fields behind Lockport High School will take on a more familiar look beginning Monday as high school football and soccer practices open throughout the Empire State.



Girls swimming, boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, golf and cheerleading will begin practicing a week later, on Aug. 20, when fall sports practices hit full stride.



Lockport High School varsity football head coach Greg Bronson said his grid players will meet at the school at 7 a.m. Monday, run through outdoor conditioning and other drills from about 8 to 10 a.m., then take a break indoors, where players will lift and do other conditioning exercises.



Then it’s back out on the field from about 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the J.V. football Cubs will also meet at 7 a.m. Monday, however, they will meet in the LHS Old Gym. Other local schools that will open with football and soccer practices on Aug. 13 are Barker/Roy-Hart, Newfane and Starpoint.



The varsity football Lions open their 2012 regular season slate at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1 with a non-division contest, hosting state-champion Orchard Park. Their annual rivalry contest against Starpoint will be played a week later at Shirley Tudor Stadium in Pendleton at 2 p.m. on Sept. 8. The Lions host Hutch Tech in their AA North division opener at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.



Meanwhile, both the LHS varsity and JV girls soccer teams will practice for the first time beginning at 8 a.m. Monday at LHS. The varsity Lady Lions are coached by Mike Finnerty.



The JV soccer Cubs will meet for the first time at 8:30 a.m. Monday at LHS and head coach Jeff Hulshoff's varsity Lions will meet at 12:30 p.m. Monday at LHS.



All other LHS fall sports teams will meet for the first time on Monday, Aug. 20.



Cross country, coached by Bob Eberhardt, will meet at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 20 at the Emmet Belknap Fieldhouse, cheerleaders will meet at 6 p.m., Aug. 20 at the LHS New Gym, golfers will meet at 11 a.m. Aug. 20 at the Niagara County Golf Course on Davison Road, girls varsity swimmers will meet at 7 a.m., divers at 7:30 a.m. and the JV girls swimmers at 10 a.m. at the LHS pool, girls tennis players will meet at 9 a.m. Aug. 20 at the LHS Tennis Courts, boys varsity and JV volleyball players will meet at 8 a.m. Aug. 20 in the LHS New Gym, LHS girls varsity volleyball players will meet at 8 a.m. on Aug. 20 in the Old Gym; and JV girls volleyball players will meet for the first time at 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 in the LHS New Gym.



Modified football practices will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 23 at North Park and modified volleyball begins at 3 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the North Park Gym.
