Lions win host soccer tournament

H.S. ROUNDUP (9/8/12): Lions spikers also get off to a great start.

PENDLETON —  

The Lockport soccer Lions took first place in their host soccer tournament on Saturday with a 3-0 title game victory over McDowell of Erie, Pa. 
Andy Reid opened the scoring for Lockport with a goal off a corner kick from Jerry West at the 13-minute mark of the first half and that’s the way the first half ended.
At the 19-minute mark of the second half, Alex Reid fed Mike Ford with a perfect pass and Ford drilled it home to give head   coach Jeff Hulshoff’s Lions a 2-0 lead.
Hunter Sherman rounded out th scoring for LHS with a late tally, assisted by Ford.
In goal, Bailey Reid made nine saves to earn his second straight shutout in goal.
Named to the All-Tourney Team from Lockport were MVP Alex Reid, Andy Reid, West, Dave Pollock and Kurtis Maloney.
“Our defense has been outstanding so far, not letting in a goal in our first three games,” Hulshoff noted.
Also named to the All-Tourney Team were McDowell’s Miguel Navarro, Luke Troncone and Tom Vercillo; St. Frances’ Jason Jablonski    and Sam Iggleston; and Nichols’ Peter Calleri and Seth Meyer.
In the LHS boys’ tourney consolation game, St. Frances defeated Nichols, 1-0. Tyler Eister scored for the winners. The shutout in goal was by Alex Davis.
Meanwhile, the Lady Lions lost their LHS tourney title game to Williamsville North, 3-1. Carly Shank scored the lone LHS goal,   assisted by Lauren Wager.
Playing well for head coach Mike Finnerty’s Lady Lions were Emma Yates, Kerri Wertman, Casey Johnston, Rachael Herbst, Kayla   Guay and Gretta Dry. Lockport (2-1 overall) hosts Lew-Port at 4:30 p.m. Monday when they resume their Niagara Frontier League   slate.
In the girls JV title game, Lockport won, 1-0, on a gaol by Miranda Kiff. Bayley Boyle had the shutout in goal for LHS.
 
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
The Lockport Lions placed first at the 15th North Tonawanda Invitational Boys Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.
The Lions defeated Grand Island in the finals, 25-14, 25-21.
Lockport beat St. Mary’s in their semifinal match, 25-10, 25-17, while Grand Island beat Ken East in their close semi, 25-20,   26-28, 25-23.
Named to the All-Tournament Team were Lockport’s Jack Whalen and Jason Donorovich, Grand Island’s Brock Tetreault and Michael   Podgorny, Ken East’s Kyle Patterson and St. Mary’s Marc Gonzalez.
