AMHERST —
Lockport’s Erin Miller, a thrower at the University at Buffalo, has been named Mid-American Conference’s Women’s Field and Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced from its Cleveland headquarters.
Miller, the daughter of Jeffrey and Paula Miller, placed second at the season-opening Wake Forest Open on March 17 in the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 181-2 (55.21m), setting a personal-best mark. She added 2.5 meters to her top throw.
The 5-7 junior was the highest Division I finisher in the field of 47 athletes, finishing behind Findlay’s Jessica Rowland. Miller also finished 10th in the women’s discus with a throw of 130-7 (39.81m).
The Bulls are next in action at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge on March 31.
Miller, a psychology major, has done charitable work with Upstate New York Transplant Services (UNYTS).
At Lockport High School, she earned four letters and captained one season. She was coached by former UB shot put and discus record holder Sarah Vance. She finished second in the shot put and third in the discus at the 2009 state federation championships. A Niagara Frontier League champion in the shot put and discus, Miller played volleyball for the Lady Lions as an outside hitter, earning four letters.
At UB, Miller finished seventh in the shot put at the MAC Indoor Championships in 2009-10 with a season-best mark of 46-7.50. Also placed 15th in the weight throw (51-11) at the indoor championships.
In 2010-11, Miller placed eighth in the hammer throw (172-0) and 12th in the discus (151-9) and 10th in the weight throw (53-4.25) at the MAC Championships. Set top marks of 172-9 in hammer and 154-9 in discus during the outdoor season and 55-0.75 in the indoor weight throw.
Miller and teammate Miles Lewis were selected as MAC athletes of the week.
Lewis, a sophomore from Coram, joined the men’s track program in January after competing at Long Island University. He led the men’s squad at the Wake Forest Open, turning in a third-place finish in the 200-meters in 21.57 and also placed ninth in the 100-meters in 10.75.
More than 1,000 athletes competed at the Wake Forest meet.
