CROSS COUNTRY: Barker boys second at state meet
Led by all-state performances from Tyler Scheving and Shawn Thompson, the Barker boys cross country team finished second in Class D at the state championships at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island.
“I‘m just very proud of the guys. They left it all on the course. This was stiff competition and they ran really well,” said Barker coach Paul DerSarkissian whose undefeated Raiders had previously captured both the Niagara-Orleans League and Section VI Class D titles. “This has definitely been a storybook season for us.”
Scheving, a freshman, was 12th in 17:45 while Thompson finished 19th in 18:05. Other top finishers for Barker included Erick Bennes (34th), Mike Lantinen (45th), Ryan Lamb (65th), Andrew Carmer (84th) and Matthew Sweeney (95th). Barker scored 81 points, behind only Beaver River (Section III).
On the girls side in class D, Barker’s Deanna Platt was 54th.
Class C
Both Wilson sophomore Kevin Hanes and Royalton-Hartland junior Vince Donner were placed on the state team after finishing 18th and 19th respectively. According to Wilson coach Brett Sippel, Hanes moved up six spots during the final mile or so.
“He had a really good day,” Sippel said. “This is a good building block for him.”
On the girls side, the Akron duo of Ellen Goldhawk and Emma Wilson finished 47th and 52nd. Roy-Hart’s Kelly Heuer was 61st.
Class B
Newfane’s Cody Burns was 102nd in the boys race, while the Lady Panthers’ Rachel Parker was 74th and Albion’s Hannah Moffett was 75th in the girls race.
