HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 18): Starpoint sweeps at Clarence Invite
The Starpoint boys and girls cross country teams both earned championships at the annual Clarence Fall Classic at Akron Falls Saturday afternoon.
On the boys side, Starpoint’s Zach Ahart crossed the finish line first in 17:04 to help the Spartans finish first in the medium schools bracket. Also for Starpoint, which finished with 45 points, Lee Gugino was sixth in 18:27, Cam Laderer was 10th in 18:37, Pat Freeman was 14th and Steve Carnduff finished 28th.
On the girls side, Lauren Scarupa finished third in 20:29 to help the Lady Spartans to the win in the medium schools bracket with 53 points. Courtney Laderer was ninth in 21:40, while Cassie Weldon was 13th, Molly Emerick was 14th and Audrey Collins was 20th.
Other local boys finishers included Nathan Haag (Niagara-Wheatfield, large schools, fifth, 17:31), Jeremy Orton (Lockport, large schools, sixth, 17:32), Andrew Krause (Lewiston-Porter, medium schools, 19th, 19:24), Joe Melcher (Lewiston-Porter, medium schools, 34th, 19:53), Craig Plante (Lewiston-Porter, medium schools, 49th), Kevin Foley (Lewiston-Porter, medium schools, 60th), Christian Peehler (Tonawanda, medium schools, 30th, 19:44), Jeremy Driscoll (Tonawanda, medium schools, 39th, 20:16) and Vince Donner (Royalton-Hartland, small schools, second, 17:36).
Other local girls finishers included Jennifer Raby (Lewiston-Porter, medium schools, 20th, 22:38), Ryleigh Fitzgerald (Lewiston-Porter, medium schools, 36th, 24:19), Amy Law (Lewiston-Porter, medium schools, 50th), Caitlin Drennan (Lewiston-Porter, medium schools, 58th) and Kelly Heuer (Royalton-Hartland, small schools, first, 21:17).

Starpoint wins NT Tourney
Most Valuable Player Sydney Palka helped the Lady Spartans topple ECIC II rival Sweet Home in the championship match of the annual North Tonawanda Lady Jacks Tournament. Her sister Sam Palka was named to the all-tournament team. In the silver finals, Sacred Heart topped North Tonawanda and in the bronze finals, Hamburg beat Falconer.
Girls Swimming
Lockport 94, NT 92
The 400 free relay quartet of Carmella Dimillo, Chelsea McKenna, Spencer Saraf and Caroline Tolli help the Lady Lions pick up the narrow Niagara Frontier League meet. Tolli (500 free) and Dimillo (200 IM) were individual winners as well for Lockport (3-2 NFL). For NT (3-2), Andi Parish won the 200 free, 100 breast and was on the winning 200 free relay.
Field Hockey
Starpoint 3, Will. East 1
The Lady Spartans scored a pair of second-half goals to pick up the ECIC small schools win in their regular-season finale. Melinda Reeb and Krista Raimondo each had a goal and an assist and Tori Pellish also scored for Starpoint (6-7-3 ECIC).
Basketball
Canadian team tops locals
Although they held it close for a half, the Niagara PAL All-Stars struggled against a roster of Division I talent in the second half of an exhibition at Niagara Falls’ Wolvearena on Saturday afternoon, falling 109-78 to a NEDA St. Mary’s Prep team that came down from Canada. Mangisto Arop, who has verbaled to Gonzaga, led the way for the visitors with 25 points while Roger Dugas had 16 points. Mike Allison, who had been recruited by Niagara, added 12 points. For the Niagara PAL team, Javon McRea (Rochester Newark) had 26 points and was a presence inside. Kelvin Agee had 16 points, but was a non-factor for much of the second half. Keron Briggs (Sweet Home) added 12 points.
“Our guys met Division I today,” coach Sal Constantino said. “It was a good lesson.”
