BOWLING: NT's Szczerbinski makes Team USA
For the second year in a row, North Tonawanda native John Szczerbinski has been selected to the United States Bowling Congress Team USA squad.
Szczerbinski, who bowls at Wichita State, totaled 7,887 to finish as the fourth-highest qualifier in the men’s trials to earn another nod to Team USA.
The top five qualifiers are selected. The other four male qualifiers include John Janawicz of Winter Haven, Fla.; Mike Fagan of Patchogue, N.Y.; Craig Hanson of Orlando; and Cassidy Schaub of Polk, Ohio. Janawicz topped the men’s field with a 36-game total of 8,168.
This year’s trials were held at Sunset Station’s Strike Zone Bowling Center in Henderson, Nev., near Las Vegas.
Leon Szczerbinski, John’s father, said the trials this year were more competitive than last year’s. “It’s really hard to maintain that level under those conditions,” he said. “There were a bunch of pro bowlers that competed this year, and they were bowling under national conditions.”
The trials were a grueling experience, with four full days of games. “I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Leon Szczerbinski said. “Nobody knows how hard John works better than I. It’s real nice for a father to sit back and see his son do really well and gain notoriety on an international level.”
John Szczerbinski’s selection to Team USA means he’ll compete for the U.S. in various international competitions, such as the World Games in Munich, Germany.
On the collegiate circuit, Szczerbinski helped lead the Wichita State Shockers to back-to-back national titles during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
