COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Bulls win finale, nip Kent State in squeaker

The University at Buffalo football team often looked good in losing efforts during a tough 2009 season.

During Friday’s finale against Kent State, however, the Bulls found a way to win ugly.

A.J. Principe booted a 22-yard field goal with five second remaining as the Bulls topped the Flashes 9-6 to finish the season at 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference.

Although Zach Maynard struggled much of the day, finishing 13 of 32, he led the Bulls down the field in the final minutes, putting Principe in position to not only win the contest, but become the school’s all-time leading scorer in the process.

“I’m proud of the way these guys battled for four quarters today against a good football team,” head coach Turner Gill said. “And extremely proud of this senior class and what they have meant to our program. During their time here they have built tradition and shown to the country that the Buffalo football program is one to be reckoned with, now and in the future.”

Although Maynard had his problems, Brandon Thermilus had a strong effort for UB, finishing with 129 yards on 29 carries.

The Bulls held Kent State (5-7, 4-4 MAC) to just 159 yards of total offense and eight first downs. Davonte Shannon had eight tackles and Buffalo had four sacks.
