HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 4): Barker wins at McQuaid Invite

Sophomore Tyler Scheving took fourth place in the boys unseeded varsity A-3 race to help Barker to the team title at the McQuaid Invitational at Genesee Valley Park Saturday afternoon. Scheving finished in 16 minutes and 24 seconds.

Also for the Raiders, Erick Bennes was 15th in 16:52, Mike Lantinen was 18th in 16:58 and Ryan Lamb came in 29th in 17:23. Jed Platt was 39th, but his time was not available.

Newfane was third in the 36-team unseeded varsity A-2 field led by Cody Burns, who was 17th in 17:08. Nick Irr was 32nd in 17:28, Josh Martin was 34th in 17:30, Chas Parker finished 72nd in 18:23 and James Schuler was 73rd in 18:24.

Wilson, meanwhile, was ninth as Kevin Hanes finished in ninth place in a time of 16:43. Mike Reubens was 31st, Scott Devole came in 46th, Liam Bull crossed in 114th and Ben Truesdell was 142nd.

On the girls side, Barker was crowned the unseeded varsity A-3 champions as Amber Sweeney led the pack with a 15th place finish in 20:19. Deanna Platt was 19th in 20:25, Sarah White took 30th in 21:06, Jamie Przybyl was 34th in 21:10, Margie Zaepfel took 44th in 21:45, Ashley White was 81st in 22:49 and Hannah McGee came in 108th in 23:53.

Newfane took sixth in the 28-team unseeded varsity A-2 race with top finishers Kelly Bocknewetch (25th, 20:15), Erin Hannah (40th, 20:41), Sarah Ziemba (41st, 20:43) and Bethany Dewey (62nd, 21:28).

Wilson was 24th with Amber Lehman as its top finisher in 87th in 22:07. Kate Placek was 149th, Kate Martin took 161st, Thea Hohensee was 172nd and Korena Wise took 206th.

No other local teams reported results.

GIRLS SOCCER

Albion 3, V-Batavia 0

Taylor Armstrong, Emilie Edwards and Rebecca Powley each had a goal and Shelby Sargent was credited with the shutout as the Purple Eagles improve to 6-4 overall.

Barker 1, V-Lyndonville

Bri Sutch scored for Barker off an assist from Emily Gendrue as the Lady Raiders fell in non-league action.

Medina 0, Fredonia 0

Alisha Newman made seven saves in net to earn the shutout in the non-league tie.

Boys Soccer

City Honors 5, Tonawanda 1

Steve Linderman scored for THS in the non-league loss. The Warriors are 4-7 overall. Nick Albberon scored a hat trick for the Centaurs.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Junior Varsity

n North Tonawanda’s Emily Milbrand was named to the all-tournament team at the Lady Jacks Invitational. NT advanced to the semifinals of the gold bracket. Orchard Park won the tournament. Grand Island lost in the semifinals of the silver bracket.
