H.S. SWIMMING: Wallace breaks LHS backstroke record
But Lions bow to visiting N-W in NFL home opener
LOCKPORT — Despite Friday’s Niagara Frontier League swim loss to visiting Niagara-Wheatfield, it was a victory of sorts for Lions senior backstroker Mark Wallace.
The Falcons defeated the Lions, 99-85, in an early-season battle of league unbeatens at the LHS pool.
Wallace broke the school’s long-standing record in the 100-yard backstroke, and also qualified for the 2010 state meet in that event. He touched first in both the 50 freestyle (:23.54) and 100 back (:54.28), setting a state-qualifying time and school record with his blistering finish.
“It’s exhilarating to be able to reach your goals,” said Wallace, who had been gunning for Tom McDonald’s old record of 54.68-seconds since the sixth grade.
“I go to the same church as his mother and had chance to meet up with him and his son about three weeks ago at a meet in Ohio,” Wallace said.
“My goal now is to break to school’s pool record in the back and my ultimate goal is a 52.”
Corey Petrie was also a double winner for Lockport, taking the 200 and 500 freestyles.
Wallace, Petrie, Jake Kwoka and Erik Ellis won the 400 relay for Lockport in 3:32.19.
For Niagara-Wheatfield (2-0), Brad Heberle won the 200 individual medley and was part of the Falcons’ winning 200 free relay team.
