LOCKPORT —
Fulfilling a life-long dream to someday open up a bowling center in the community he was born and raised in, and following in the giant footsteps of one of his mentors, the late, great Allie Brandt, “Brad Angelo Lanes” will open officially on Aug. 31 at the sight of the former South Transit Lanes, 6280 S. Transit Road.
Earlier this year, Angelo announced his purchase of STL with the hopes of closing in time to open by Wednesday of this week. However, the deal didn't officially close until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday and there were several things that Angelo didn't want to pursue until the deal was official, which will take just a little more time.
With the deal now closed, Angelo said everything should up and running in two weeks time.
Brad, who's in Ohio participating in a PBA event, and his wife, Michelle, said Thursday that they're anxious to get started and look forward to challenges of operating the large bowling center, which includes a pro shop, game room, bar and kitchen.
On Thursday, with husband Brad crossing into Ohio, Michelle was busy at the bowling center trying to cope with the work ahead and the dozen or so workers refurbishing the South Transit Road bowling center that's been a staple in the community since the mid-1960s.
“At times, it's been crazy, with the contractors and the bowlers and the reporters,” Michelle Angelo said. “It's just been an unbelievable experience and we're excited about this opportunity. The work is coming along nicely and both Brad and I look forward to the Aug. 31 opening date.”
Brad, the former PBA Rookie of the Year, ESPN Bowler of the Year nominee and PBA Tour champion, said he's relieved to be near his goal of operating a Lockport bowling center.
Soon after closing, the marquee in front of STL was changed to read, “It's official. Brad Angelo Lanes Aug. 31.”
“There's been so many rumors flying — most of them not even close to being true — so it's a great to finally be able to set the record straight about a lot of things,” Brad said. “It's been a struggle all summer, but we got it done we will be open with everything up and running on the 31st ."
Brad and Michelle will be the bowling center's only two full-time employees. About 25 part-time workers will be hired shortly.
Brad becomes the second acclaimed Lockport bowler to open a bowling center here. Allie Brandt, who held the world record for the highest three-game bowling series in history (886 at Allen's Lanes on Pine Street, downtown) for four decades, opened up a Lincoln Avenue bowling center in the early 1960s.
