Senior Kelsey Stamates' clutch double to left field in the seventh inning plated Kelly Anderson with the eventual winning run in Lockport's 3-2 softball victory over Kenmore West.
Friday's battle of Niagara Frontier League unbeatens went down to the wire with the Lady Blue Devils (4-1 NFL) threatening in their last at bat, trailing 3-1. A close, safe call at first resulted in one run, but Lady Lions senior ace Kassidy McFall struck out a batter to end the game.
With the hard fought road win, head coach Julie Kwoka's Lady Lions improved to 5-0 in the NFL and are 8-0 overall.
The game was scoreless through three innings.
In the top of the fourth, LHS senior Emily Belfield singled, then scored on senior Kelly McKeever's one out three-bagger. Senior Patti Burdick followed with an RBI single to left, plating McKeever.
Ken West scored one run in their half of the fourth, but the game stayed 2-1 Lockport until the seventh, when Anderson singled and stole second. Stamates then delivered the fatal blow with a double to left, plating Anderson with the eventual winning run to make it 3-1, heading to Ken West's final at-bat.
After fanning the final batter of the game to make the final 3-2 Lady Lions, McFall finished with seven strikeouts in her seventh straight solid outing in the circle for the blue and gold.
Next up, the Lady Lions play at North Tonawanda at 4:45 p.m. Monday.
Will S. 12, Starpoint 3
PENDLETON — Freshman Madison Clark and senior Kelsey Dickerson had two hits apiece for head coach Joe Hill's Lady Spartans (2-8 ECIC II).
Haley Struebing went 5-for-5 for Will South.
Next up, Starpoint plays at Williamsville East at 4:45 p.m. Monday.
Wilson 13, CSAT 5
BUFFALO — Winning pitcher Lindsay Bryer had 14 strikeouts and helped her own cause at the plate with four RBIs for the Lakewomen (3-3 N-O, 4-7 overall).
Also for Wilson, Bekah Blasius had two RBIs, while Sam Ess and Taylor Devole added one RBI apiece.
Albion 19, Newfane 5
NEWFANE — Trailing 5-4, Albion erupted for 10 runs in the fifth inning to run away from Newfane on Friday to stay perfect at 7-0 at the halfway point of the N-O softball season.
Moyer and Jenn Knaak both finished with four hits for the Purple Eagles as Papponetti and Jurs both had three and Prentice, Grimes and Ali O'Hearn two.
The loss drops Newfane to 2-4 in the N-O.
Barker 22, Medina 11
Ali Denny belted a three-run homer and a grand slam home run to spark Barker (3-3 N-O) past Medina at Vets Park. Denny finished with five hits and nine RBIs.
Destiny Metzler added three hits and Danielle Senior and Destiny Hillman two each for Barker which scored in every inning including five in the second and four in both the third and seventh frames.
Olivia Hermann had a home run and a single and Stormi Kruger two doubles for Medina (2-4 N-O).
Lockport 13, Ken West 12 (8)
At sunny Outwater Park, Colin Dougherty smacked the bases-loaded, game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, plating Tyler Fraas with the winning run as head coach Steve Styrzo's Lions improved to 3-2 in the NFL.
Alex Weaver earned the mound win for Lockport. Doughertyy finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Fraas added two hits with an RBI double and sophomore Charlie Sobieraski added three RBIs.
Styrzo praised the efforts of his catcher, sophomore Danny Bronson, who caught three straight games for the blue and gold.
Tommy Ryan went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Ken West (1-3 NFL).
Next up, the Lions host North Tonawanda at 4:45 p.m. Monday at Outwater Park.
Starpoint 9, Will. South 5
PENDLETON — Matt Miller was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs for the Spartans (5-6, 3-4 ECIC II).
Without a hit after five frames, the Spartans sent 14 batters to the plate in the sixth. Alex O'Donnell, who went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs, broke up the no-no.
Barker 14, Newfane 10
NEWFANE — Alonzo St. Louis was 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBs and scored four runs as head coach Rob Mucha's Raiders posted their first N-O win of the year in a big way.
Also for Barker (1-5 N-O), Spencer Moore was 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored, Zach Shaft went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored and Tyler Gregorie was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
Also playing well for Barker was Tanner Gregorie, who was called up from the junior varsity because of a shortage of players. Tanner went 2-for-4 with two big RBIs and two runs scored.
Sophomore Tim Flint went the distance to earn the win on the mound.
Lockport 5, Lew-Port 0
Lockport's second doubles tandem of Luke Sciandra and Nick Guay won their first ever varsity match for the Lions (3-2 NFL).
Posting a singles sweep were Lockport's Connor Dry, Brendan Williams and Joel Schlitzer. Earning a first doubles win for LHS were Jeremy Cogovan and Sean Kearns.
The Lancers dropped to 0-5 in the NFL.
Wilson 3, Medina 2.5
WILSON — George Waters Jr. and Isaiah Barret won second and third doubles, respectively, for the Lakemen (3-1 N-O).
Akron 10, Wilson 2
WILSON — Tyler Martin and Jacob Farmer scored for the Lakemen (7-1, 4-1 Class C).
