Local schools ready to get started

Football seasons kickoff Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

LOCKPORT —  

It won't be long now before high school fall sports teams take to local fields, courses and gyms to start their regular season slates in Section VI.
The 2012 high school football season gets underway this weekend with all local schools competing for a chance at Ralph Wilson Stadium and a sectional championship.
The fun starts Friday night with local schools Newfane, Wilson and Barker/Royalton-Hartland taking to the grid iron on the road. Newfane plays at Buffalo East, Barker/Roy-Hart is at Alden and Wilson plays at Gowanda. All are 7 p.m. starts.
Other Friday night football games involving local schools (also 7 p.m. starts) are Kenmore West at Jamestown, Niagara-Wheatfield at McKinley (at Riverside), Lewiston-Porter at Burgard (at All High Stadium), Medina at Akron and Sweet Home at North Tonawanda. Games starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday include Niagara Falls at Lancaster, Albion at Depew and Cheektowaga at Tonawanda.
The Lockport football Lions open off their 2012 season Saturday afternoon at home against state-Class AA champion Orchard Park. The kickoff is at 2 p.m. at Max D. Lederer Field behind Emmet Belknap.
Other 2 p.m. Saturday varsity football contests include Willliamsville North at Starpoint and Kenmore East at Grand Island.
The high-octane Lockport Lions and Lady Lions will open their Niagara Frontier League soccer seasons on Tuesday against Niagara-Wheatfield.
Head coach Jeff Hulshoff's Lions are at N-W in Sanborn, while the Lady Lions will host the Lady Falcons. Both games are 4:30 p.m. starts. Starpoint, meanwhile, opens its boys ECIC season hosting Sweet Home at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The N-O girls soccer season also opens on Tuesday with Medina at Newfane and Barker at Wilson, both 4:30 p.m. starts. Boys N-O season-opening contests Wednesday include Newfane at Medina (4:30 p.m.) and Akron at Royalton-Hartland (6:30 p.m. at Gasport Elementary School).
Starpoint's girls soccer team opens its ECIC season at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday hosting Sweet Home.
The Lockport Lady Lions tennis team opens its NFL season at 4 p.m. Wednesday with a match at Kenmore East.
The Lady Spartans girls volleyball team opens its ECIC slate at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Williamsville South.
On the links at 4 p.m. Wednesday, the LHS Lions open their NFL season at Niagara Falls, while the N-O season also gets underway with matches that include Newfane at Albion (at Hickory Ridge) and Barker at Wilson (at Willowbrook).
N-O girls volleyball and field hockey seasons open Thursday.
