COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Fluellen injured in U-Maine scrimmage

ORONO, Maine — Former Lockport High School great Jhamal Fluellen injured his left ankle during a preseason scrimmage game last week as a member of the University of Maine Black Bears, according to published reports in the Bangor Daily News. His status this week is uncertain.

Fluellen, a running back, was injured late in the first half of an inter-squad scrimmage and sat out the rest of the game.

The 2004 graduate of Lockport High School, Fluellen is the Lions all-time leading rusher under former coach Mike Finn. He holds three Lions school rushing records, including single-season yards (2,055), all-time rushing yards (3,417) and yards per carry (10.0).

Fluellen, 23, a senior co-captain, along with Black Bears teammate senior center Ryan Canary were named preseason All-CAA selections.

Last year, Fluellen earned third-team All-CAA honors, starting all 11 games at tailback and rushing for 1,052 yards (4.7 ypc) and five touchdowns. He became just the eighth back in school history to top 1,000 yards rushing in a season

Donning his familiar uniform number 32, Fluellen rushed for more than 100 yards in five games, including two of over 150 yards and finished the season ranked 37th nationally in rushing. He also caught 27 passes for 302 yards (11.2 ypc) and two scores.

Last year, Fluellen was named a Maine Scholar-Athlete and won the Jack Butterfield Outstanding Offensive Player Award.

Fluellen’s high school teammate, former Black Bears defensive back Daren Stone, was drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Fluellen’s younger brother, David, a junior at LHS, is the starting tailback of the Lions this season under coach Greg Bronson.

Maine enters its 117th season of intercollegiate football in 2008 with an all-time record of 468-447-38.
