WILMINGTON, N.Y. —
Eleven-year-old Jake Weaver took first place recently in the youth division at the 13th Annual Ausable River Two Fly Challenge.
In the unique fishing tournament, contestants were allowed but two flies of their chosing for each day of the two-day event.
Jake’s first day’s choice was a March Brown, and the Ausable Bomber, a dry fly creation from Wilmington’s “The Hungry Trout Fly Shop.”
While the March Brown failed to get a glance from the finicky fish, Jake said once he switched to the Ausable Bomber, the action got hot and he ended the first day netting two respectible fish totaling 30 inches.
Jake chose two “Bombers” for the second day of the challenge. A nice brown broke off early Saturday morning leaving Jake with only one fly for the rest of the day.
“The worst part about it was when the large trout tauntingly settled behind a small rock right in front of me with the stolen fly stuck in the corner of his mouth,” Jake said.
By the end of the day, he landed three trout — the largest being 18 inches — to push his winning total to 72 inches.
“I probably averaged four hook-ups for every one I landed,” Jake said.
“We had several fantastic days in the Adirondacks, but winning the fly rod, reel and line put the icing on the cake.”
