LOCKPORT —
Interested tennis players don't have long to wait to sign up for the annual Lockport Summer Tennis Program.
Registration dates begin next week at the Altro Park tennis courts on Willow Street, where tennis classes for both youth and adults are being offered for all levels, from beginner to advanced.
Returning as camp head instructor is Lockport High School's veteran boys varsity tennis coach Dave Shambach, a United States Tennis Professionals Association member and 36-year veteran of the program.
Shambach will be assisted by former LHS tennis team players Allison Beatty, Brandon Pawlinski, Megan McAvoy, Brian Smist and others.
Sign-up dates are from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 14. as well as 9:30 to 11 a.m. on June 16 and 6 to 8 p.m. on June 20. In case of rain, head to the adjacent picnic pavilion or Lockport Department of Youth and Recreation building. Lesson sites will be both the Altro Park and LHS tennis courts.
Shambach said youth classes will be held in two sessions of approximately three weeks in length each. Session I is June 27 to July 13 and Session II is July 17-31.
Youth classes will be offered in two levels with participants grouped by age and ability. Beginner level players through advanced beginner will participate in one class, while intermediate through advanced players will be split into small groups, by permission of the instructor.
Classes will run for about 45 minutes each, between 8:15 a.m. and noon, and from 1 to 3:30 p.m., two or three days per week, depending on the session.
Adult classes will be held a mixture of Tuesdays and Thursday evenings at 5:10, 6:10, and
7:10 p.m., depending on ability level. Dates are June 28 and July 5, 10, 12, 17 and 24.
The lessons are part of the Lockport Department of Youth and Recreation Services’ Summer Recreation Program. A fee of $40 per person per session will be charged. Varying rates for families and couples are also offered.
More information will be available at the registration desk or by calling the city youth department at 434-3071.
