H.S. GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lady Lions will meet Fairport on Saturday
Lady Red Raiders win Section V crown on Monday night
ROCHESTER — It will be Lockport versus Fairport on Saturday for the 2010 New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls basketball Far West Regional.
The Lady Red Raiders (20-2) earned the Section V Class AA title late on Monday night with a dramatic, 68-60 overtime victory over Mercy at Gates-Chili High School, the same sight for this Saturday’s big game.
Fairport (20-2) outscored Mercy (19-3) 18-10 in the overtime session to advance.
Allyson DiMagno led the Lady Red Raiders with 27 points. Jordan Harrington added 14 points for Section V AA Coach of the Year Scott Forrest. Mary Kate Tierney topped Mercy with 29 points.
Lockport (18-3) advanced to the Far West Regional with a 47-40 Section VI Class AA title game victory over Williamsville North on Saturday afternoon at the Erie Community College Flickinger Center in Buffalo.
The Lady Lions will be led this weekend by seniors Renee Schwartz and Lea Sobieraski, junior Caroline Randall and an outstanding supporting cast that includes sophomores Marisa Guyton, Emma Sobieraski, Casey Oliphant and Patti Burdick.
Assisting Shaw are Pete Dickinson and Jill DiTullio, who coached the LHS junior varsity girls basketball team to an undefeated (14-0) Niagara Frontier League season.
The winner of the Lockport-Fairport showdown at 4 p.m. this Saturday will advance to the NYSPHSAA “Final Four” at 8 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y. north of Albany.
Among those who watched Monday’s exciting contest in Rochester was Lady Lions head coach Bill Shaw, along with several Lions assistant coaches and players.
Fairport, a semifinal loser last year to eventual-champion Penfield, was the top-seeded team in Section V Class AAA, while Mercy was No. 1 in AA. Lockport was the top seed in Section VI Class AA. Will North was No. 3.
