Final bows on Senior Night

Kearns shines, but Falcons claim third straight NFL title

LOCKPORT —

Lockport senior diver Sean Kearns saved his best for last and junior teammate Derek Secord was a double individual winner, but it wasn’t enough in Friday’s Niagara Frontier League season-ending 98-82 loss to Niagara-Wheatfield.
With the win, the visiting Falcons (13-1 NFL) clinched their third straight league title and sixth in the past eight eight years, all under veteran head coach Mike Corsaro.
Kearns, who was honored before the boys swim meet along with teammate Steven Tran on “Senior Night at LHS, executed an almost perfect “one and a half one” on his sixth and final attempt, winning the diving competition with 210.68 points.
Ranked third in Section VI and coached by Lions’ assistant Jasper Adams, Kearns said he looks forward to the upcoming NFLs and sectionals because he’ll be diving at pools other than his own.
“The away meets are a lot easier for me than diving here,” Kearns said. “I’m not under as much pressure because there aren’t as many familiar faces.”
Secord dominated in winning the 50 freestyle (:22.42) and 100 freestyle (:52.36) events for head coach John Sullivan’s Lions, who finished 11-3 and in third place in the league. Kenmore West, a 90-85 winner over Niagara Falls on Friday, finished second in the NFL at 12-2.
The only other individual winner for the Lions on Friday night was junior Shawn Moore, who placed first in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.13.
The Lions also won two of the meet’s three relays. Secord, freshman Austin Hinton, sophomore John Patterson and junior Scott Guyton won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:35.30, while Guyton, Moore, Secord and junior Bryan Wojcinski touched first in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:37.89.
Junior Danny Peltier was a double individual winner for the Falcons, taking the 200 individual medley (2:13.62) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.96).
Also for N-W, sophomore Jack Jibb won the 200 free, senior Josh Miller the 100 butterfly (:53.88) and sophomore Tyler Fleming the 500 free (5:26.08).
“Our kids just keep stepping up. They’re great kids and they work hard,” Corsaro said. “Lockport helped us — two great schools and great competition.”

Alec Toth (200 free, 500 free) and A.J. Joslin (100 back, 100 butterfly) were also double individual winners for the garnet and gray. Andrew Luckman won the 200 individual medley and Corey Poole took the 100 breaststroke.
NFL BOWLING
TONAWANDA — Lockport senior Bridget Masiello tossed the girls’ high single game of 251 at the 2013 NFL Individuals Bowling Tournament on Friday night at the Tonawanda Bowling Center.
Lewiston-Porter’s Alexis Wade had the highest series with a 649. Masiello was fourth with a 632 and senior teammate Brittany Wright added a 603 — the fourth highest set.
Niagara-Wheatfield’s Colten Kitcho bowled a perfect game – his first ever – as part of a 760 set to take both high-game and high-series honors on the boys’ side.
Lockport sophomore Matt Topolski was third in the boys doubles competition, with playing partner Brandon Forster of North Tonawanda. They rolled a 1,270. Grand Island’s A.J. Brink and Ken East’s Kyle Kijowski were the boys doubles winners with a 1,405.
Girls doubles winners with a 1,087 were NT’s Abbey Kiefer and Grand Island’s Christina Sutton.
Winners of the Lou Marcantonio Award as shootout champions were Grand Island’s Joe Torregrossa and Lauren Cook.
