LOCKPORT —
James Chambers scored four touchdowns and Dan Bronson had a career day passing as Lockport routed visiting Hutch Tech on Saturday, 38-8, in their 2012 Class AA North football opener.
The senior tailback Chambers rushed six times for 84 yards and two touchdowns, then added three catches for 88 yards and two more scores for LHS (2-1 overall, 1-0 AA North), while the junior quarterback Bronson finished a stellar 14 for 19 passing for 200 yards and three TDs on a record-setting day at Max D. Lederer Field.
Topping it all off on a day in which Lockport put up points the first five times they had the ball was LHS senior kicker Kyle Few, whose 47-yard third-quarter field goal (into the wind) tied the school record shared by himself and Charles Shellman.
“Our offensive line really did a great job today. I can’t say enough about how well they played. I had all day to throw and they gave our backs big holes to run through. Nobody touched me all game,” said Bronson, a sophomore starter a year ago.
“We said we were going to run the ball, but we took what the defense dictated and their pass coverages gave us exactly what we were looking for. We have a lot of good athletes on this team and I tried to distribute the ball around and get the ball into their hands so they could make plays.”
Bronson found senior wide receiver RD Hillman wide open down the middle for a 37-yard touchdown in the first quarter, then hit Chambers in stride with another perfect pass for a 40-yard TD to open the second. Moments later, after senior linebacker Tyler Dimsey recovered an Engineers fumble, Chambers danced in from 14 yards out to make it 21-0 as Few added the third of his five extra points on the day.
After Few tied the school record hitting a 47-yard field goal that could have gone 55, the Engineers got on the board as junior quarterback Zach Filipski (3-of-7 passing, 83 yards, TD) hit junior receiver Rayshawn McMillon with a 16-yard TD pass in the back of the end zone. Junior back Roman West (16 rushes, 61 yards) added the two-point run for Hutch Tech (0-3 overall, 0-2 AA North).
Chambers rounded out the scoring on Lockport’s next possession, running like a pinball, bouncing off defenders on a 40-yard score.
“We had a good week of practice,” Chambers said. “The O line did a great job today. Everyone did their job today.”
Lockport’s defense was also outstanding with five sacks as junior Marshall Taylor and senior Tom Furlong were a force throughout. Senior Evan Aloisio recorded yet another sack and senior Will Diebel and Chambers made several big plays on long passes, knocking the ball away. Other Lions sacks were recorded or shared by Furlong, Taylor, Chambers and seniors Mitchell Evans and Seth Anderson.
“I thought the defense did a great job today. This was our first division game, so coming away with a win was important,” Aloisio said.
