OUR VIEW: Positive 'Effect' on Canal Street

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — We’re heartened that the owners of Lake Effect Ice Cream are moving their business to Canal Street — inside a former ice cream parlor, no less. It could be the jump-start that’s needed for this tiny street that sits in the shadows of Lock 34.

The move will return a downtown building to the tax rolls. More importantly, it’s a sign that the business is growing. When it started at its Lock Street location in 2008, Lake Effect offered a handful of ice cream varieties. Today the business offers 30 varieties at its parlor, of which 13 are sold at area stores. The new building offers twice as much space to keep the artisan ice cream maker running year-round.

More importantly, Lake Effect counted around 46,000 visitors to its parlor from May through October. Those are pedestrians who will now be walking along Canal Street, where they’ll be closer to other businesses.

On the other end of the street is Ellen Martin’s Sweet Ride bicycle rental shop. She’s done a fine job bringing people down to Canal Street a well. The combination of these two businesses has the potential to be a “sweet” combination.

In addition, Lake Effect’s move could make the unoccupied first floor at 51 Canal Street more attractive for a potential business.

We wish Jason Wulf and Erik Bernardi continued success with Lake Effect and look forward to the opening of their new location next spring.
