ELIZABETH CITY, NC —
Jean S. Swenson died on August 10, 2012, in Elizabeth City, NC. She was born September 22, 1924, in Buffalo, NY.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Eugene; by her daughters, Leslie (David) Reifel and Martha (Thomas) Burbeck; and by her grandchildren, Joshua and Samantha Reifel, Jennifer (Timothy) Reifel Lewis, and Gene and Eric Burbeck.
Family, reading, and especially music were her muses. Her dream of being a concert pianist was transformed by the cultural norms of the day to a masters degree in music education (SUNY Fredonia) and a 26-year career teaching music in the Springville, Buffalo, and Lockport, NY, public schools. By her teaching, many young people were inspired to a lifelong love of music, and more than a few, to careers of their own in music and the arts. She was an active participant and leader in the music programs at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, NY, and First Presbyterian Church in Lockport, NY. She and her husband resided for the past 15 years in the Chesapeake, VA, and Elizabeth City, NC, area.
A memorial service will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 724 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, at 4 PM on October 27, 2012.
