Mr. Walter A. Shimmel, of Medina, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the Medina Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Shimmel was born in Keystone, PA, April 1, 1925, a son of the late Joseph and Helen (Dezalga) Shimmel. A WWII US Army veteran, he served from Jan. 1946 to Feb. 1947. Mr. Shimmel was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish/St. Mary's Church. He was a member of Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion and was an active member of the Honor Guard until 2009, and a social member of the VFW. For many years, he was employed by Harrison Radiator Division of GMC. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and his many friends and family.
Survivors include his nephew, Ronald (Sharon) Shimmel of Akron; two great-nieces, Maria (Edward) Kreher and Michelle (Robert) Finnigan; good friend, Lois Sprester. He was predeceased by his siblings, Anna (Richard) Schultz, Mary (Fred) Durrant, Katherine (John) Dulak, Frances (Bud) O'Kussick, Nellie Shimmel, Michael (Sarah) Shimmel, John (Marie) Shimmel and Andrew (Gladys) Shimmel; and his niece, Sally Shimmel.
Friends may call on Friday (6-9) at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. The Rev. Daniel J. Fawls will celebrate his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 11AM, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish/St. Mary's Church and entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum. Military honors will be accorded at St. Mary's Mausoleum by members of Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion and Lincoln Post #1483, VFW. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Parish.
