Shirley S. Cook, 87, of Amherst, NY, passed away Saturday (February 4, 2012), at Oakwood Health Care Center, Williamsville.
Shirley was born April 14, 1924, in Akron, the daughter of the late Stanley and Margaret Jones Steiner.
After graduation from Akron High School, she was employed as a secretary at the school for nearly 10 years. Following her marriage, Shirley resided in Lockport where she was an active member of Emmanuel Methodist Church, having taught Sunday school and served on church commissions. Shirley was also an employee of the Niagara County Health Department for several years. After retirement, she moved to Florida with her husband, but returned to this area in 2003 to be near her family. At the time of her death, she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Amherst. Traveling, sewing and craftwork were some of Shirley's favorite pastimes, and she also enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband, Duane Cook of Amherst; daughter, Virginia (Roger) McEldowney of Williamsville; son, Douglas (Mona) Cook of Auburn, CA; sister, Elleen Case of New Port Richey, FL; and she is also survived by two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may call Thursday 4-7 PM at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4-6 Main Street, Corfu, NY, where funeral services will be held Friday at 2 PM. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu.
