Jean Gardner Hellman

PACIFIC GROVE, CA — Jean G. Hellman, a resident of Pacific Grove since 1959, went home to be with the Lord on April 4, 2012, at Community Hospital.  Born March 8, 1918 in Barker, NY, she graduated from Barker High School and Rochester Business Institute.

Jean's marriage in 1940 to Edwin Sunderville, U.S. Army Vet Corp., provided them the         opportunity to live in Japan, Germany and various locations throughout the U.S. Their last duty station was Ft. Ord where Col. Sunderville died in 1963. Jean remained on the peninsula until her passing.

In 1965, Jean married F.W. Hellman of Hellman's Hardware. She became an active       member of the community, joining a variety of groups that supported her interests in reading, writing, knitting, antiques and spirituality. Jean was a charter member of Questers, an active member of Unity Church of Monterey Bay, and was a local realtor.  She was a very special friend to those in her community with her generous spirit and welcoming nature. To her family, Jean was "Mama".

Jean is survived by her daughters, Nancy Taylor of Palo Alto, CA and Sue Thompson of Merced, CA; four grandchildren and two great-grandsons; as well as Bill Hellman and his daughters, Susan and Melissa. She also leaves her brother, Gordon Gardner, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at Unity Church of Monterey Bay, 601 Madison St., in Monterey on May 5, 2012, at 2:00 PM. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Unity Church at the above address. To sign Jean's guest book and leave messages for her family, please visit www.thepaulmortuary.com.
