Elizabeth W. (Betty) Cheverie

LOCKPORT — Elizabeth W. (Betty) Cheverie, 87, died, peacefully, in her sleep January 4, 2013 in         Lockport, NY. She was born October 3, 1925, at Deaconess Hospital in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of George Manning (Pete) and Evelyn Maier Ward.

She was a 1943 graduate of Kenmore Senior High School and received a BS in Library Science from Geneseo State Teacher's College in 1947, where she was the first non-sorority president of the student government. She also received her MS in Education at Geneseo and was dually certified in Library and K-8 Common subjects. Her career in library included such diverse settings as a public school/community combined library in Leroy, NY, a bookmobile in Youngstown, OH, bringing the library to rural towns, and school libraries in      Avoca, NY, Buffalo, NY and Barker, NY, where she was the elementary librarian for 23 years.

On December 21, 1957, she was married to Edward A Cheverie, who predeceased her in 1974.

She was a past president of the Barker Free Library Board of Directors and the Barker PTA, a member of the Faith United Methodist Church Administrative Board and Finance Committee, United Methodist Women, Eastern Niagara County Retired Teachers Association, School Library Association, Medina Memorial Hospital TWIGS, the Lee-Whedon Memorial Library Board, SUNY Geneseo Reunion Committee, the Kenmore High Class of 1943 Reunion Committee, and was a life member of the National Education Association.

She enjoyed reading, family time, bird-watching, traveling within the US and Canada, knitting, crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy and could not be beaten at games of Trivial Pursuit. She often said that as a librarian she did not have to know all the answers; she had only to know where to find the answers.

She is survived by three children, Mary K. (Mike Johnson) of Raleigh, NC, Susan C. (Thomas) Carestia of Barker, and Albert P. (Janet) Cheverie of Albion;  three grandchildren, Ashleigh and Andrew Cheverie, and Christiana Carestia; a sister, Margery W. Newkirk of Mukilteo, WA; a brother, Robert L. (Kathryn) Ward of Friday Harbor, WA;  many nieces and nephews and several cousins.  She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Marion L. Ward.

Friends may call at the RUTLAND-CORWIN FUNERAL HOME, INC., 2670 Main St.,          NEWFANE, NY, WEDNESDAY 3-7 PM. A memorial service will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 1449 Quaker Road, Barker, NY, THURSDAY at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery when weather permits.
