Joan M. Betzler, age 81, of Newfane, NY, died on Thursday, August 9, 2012, at Eastern Niagara Hospital, Newfane, NY. Born on March 1, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Mabel (Streeter) and Earl Wolford.
Mrs. Betzler was a graduate of Newfane Central, Class of '48. She furthered her education at SUNY at Brockport and received her master's degree from SUNY at Buffalo. Mrs. Betzler was a Special Education teacher at Newfane Middle School until her retirement. She enjoyed teaching and helping others.
Mrs. Betzler taught religious education for over 20 years at St. Charles RC Church in Olcott. She was a leader for the 4-H Club Hobby Girls, a member of the Home Dem Group, the Card Club, Niagara County Cooperative Extension and Women for the Survival of Agriculture.
Mrs. Betzler is survived by her daughters, Anne Mardon of Wheatfield, NY, Gail Gokey of North Tonawanda, NY, Rebecca (Joel) Bornstein of Wading River, NY, and Patricia Betzler of Wheatfield, NY; grandchildren, Jeremy, Sarah and Rachel; her sister, Jane Cory of Leroy, NY and her nephews, Dan, Patrick, Ed and Will. She was predeceased by her husband, MJ "Pete" Betzler on April 22, 2010; and son-in-law, Tab Mardon.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2012 from 2-6 PM at Rutland-Corwin Funeral Home, Inc., 2670 Main St., Newfane, NY 14108. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at St. Brendan on the Lake, Olcott site at 11 AM. Burial in St. Charles Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Assoc., 1595 Elmwood Ave., Rochester, NY 14620; or American Heart Assoc., 20 Northpointe Hwy., Amherst, NY.
