Tears for Fears packed the Ulrich City Centre on Friday night for the second-last concert in the Molson Canal Concert Series. Fans came not only from the Lockport area, but across Western New York and well beyond.
Kevin Bixby came to Lockport from Carlisle, Pa., to see the concert.
"I first saw Tears for Fears in 1990," he said. "I made a six-hour trip up here."
Daniela Ball came from Brazil. "I love Tears for Fears and I wish my brother was here," she said. With her in the front row Friday night was Sushila Chanhan of India.
While she didn't come quite as far as Ball and Chanhan, Becky Milakis, of Lafayette, Ind., made quite an investment to see the music.
"I spent $500 on air fare, rental car and hotel for a free concert," she said.
The two frontmen, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, formed Tears For Fears in the early 1980s and built up a loyal following.
The English group found immediagte success in their native country with 1983's "The Hurting," which yielded three Top 5 singles in the United Kingdom and stayed on the British charts for 65 weeks.
The band broke the American market with 1985's "Songs From the Big Chair," with recognizable hits like "Shout" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World."
By 1991, Smith left the band and Orzabal continued to perform and record under the Tears For Fears moniker.
After years apart, the two reunited for 2004's aptly titled album, "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending.
Since then, the band has continued to perform together and released a live album/DVD called "Secret World-Live in Paris."
Opening acts at Friday's concert were The Pillagers, a Buffalo "supergroup" formed in 2008; Missing Star, performing songs from their new release, "Life Moving Backwards"; and the Jamie Moses Band, with Caitlin.
