Jobless totals drop slightly
Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.
The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.

Willow Street victim identified
The victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Willow Street on Saturday was identified by Lockport Police as Richard Boye, 46.

Balloon seen over Lockport
This hot air balloon traveling across eastern Niagara County literally stopped traffic on Saunders Settlement Road in the Town of Lockport at around 8 p.m. Sunday as passersby paused their travels to look at — and take photos of — the balloon.

Standoff ends with gunman dead, woman in hospital
In the end, it was over before it began.
In a phone call to 911 shortly before 5 p.m., a man — as of yet unnamed — told dispatch "on behalf of myself and my 82-year-old mother. I'd like to report a death."
Dispatch asked, "whose?"
"Mine," the man retorted.

Vendors sought for Canal Street market
Vendor applications are now available for the 2012 Lockport Community Market, an open-air market to be open Saturdays in July and August on Canal Street.
The goal of the market is to provide a venue for area businesses, farmers, merchants and artisans to showcase their wares, and show the depth and variety of Lockport's business community, according to organizer Heather Peck, program manager of Lockport Main Street Inc.

Council OKs PR post
The Common Council OKd creation of a new city job title, marketing and communications manager, by a unanimous vote Wednesday.
Specifics of the position, including salary, have yet to be approved. Applications are already coming in, according to Mayor Michael Tucker.
The position was recommended by the mayor’s ad hoc tourism committee, which is looking at ways the city can help advance Lock City tourism.
