Council to vote on new public speaking rules
A motion to put time limits on public speaking in Common Council meetings will be voted on by the body when it meets Wednesday.

City to pro-rate refuse bills
The city treasurer’s office will adjust the city refuse collection bills of property owners who didn’t own and occupy property for the entire Jan. 1 to Oct. 10, 2011, billing period.
City Treasurer Michael White confirmed Tuesday that his office will reduce the bills of property owners who can show, through property documents, that they didn’t use 91⁄2 months of city refuse pickup service last year. -
Joyful news being spread
Eight Lockport High School students have been recognized for their singing ability, including two who will perform in April in Albany for the New York State Senate.
Junior Lauren O’Brien and Senior Joshua Vacanti have been selected as members of the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The group performed last month at the New York State School Music Association Conference in Rochester, then again for the senate in April. -
End of an era
Richard P. Mullaney has worked for eight different Lockport mayors over the course of his career.
He’s been a trail builder for the city parks department, a garbage thrower, floor sweeper, street paver and snow plow operator for the streets department and a budget analyst for the old planning & budget office.
Since 1985, he’s been the city clerk, budget director and deputy registrar of vital statistics. Occasionally, as needed, he’s been a Civil Service test administrator, labor negotiator and acting assessor. Through it all, he’s been an unofficial municipal historian, archivist and keeper of information.
As of today, Mullaney is a city retiree, credited with nearly 40 years of exemplary public service. His last day on the job was Friday. -
Mongielo could see jail time for sign
An auto repair shop owner could be looking at jail time if he is convicted next month of violating the Town of Lockport’s sign ordinance again.
David J. Mongielo was in Town Court on Wednesday to face another count of violating Lockport’s sign ordinance. The law says any sign which is capable of changing the format or message may not change any more than once every 10 minutes. -
IDA borrows $20,000 from town
The Town of Lockport will be loaning $20,000 to its Industrial Development Agency, after Town Board members approved the measure at its year end work session Wednesday.
Board members voted unanimously to approve the loan, which would be used to help the IDA for marketing purposes. The IDA often draws retailers and other businesses to set up shop in the town, which is one of the main functions of the agency. -
Sharing supper
Latter Rain Cathedral at Lockport sponsored a Christmas program Friday night. Following the gathering and Christmas play, Cathedral members and anyone in the community were treated to a free spaghetti dinner.
