LOCKPORT — Keith McNall is returning to the Niagara County Legislature.

McNall was re-elected Tuesday by a 1,865 to 1,281 margin, according to the Niagara County Board of Elections. Winning in all 14 voting districts, McNall was happy and thankful for the result.

“I’m humbled. I’m pleased. And I thank the voters,” McNall said. “They showed they still have trust and confidence in me, believe I’ve done a good job for them, and I will continue to do so.”

McNall defeated Andrew D. Chapman, the City of Lockport’s 4th Ward alderman. Chapman did not return a phone call for comment late Tuesday night.

McNall, a life-long resident of Lockport, was the incumbent serving what was the 16th Distinct since 2006. With the Legislature downsizing from 19 to 15 districts, McNall’s seat become the 13th, covering the city of Lockport.

McNall was endorsed by the Republican, Conservative, Working Family and Independence parties. A retired Delphi employee, he has also served on the Lockport City school board.

Chapman was a Republican who had the Democratic ballot line. Chapman is the president and part owner of I.K. Systems.

The election between McNall and Chapman had gotten somewhat negative over the past few weeks.

“It was uncomfortable and unfortunate,” McNall said. “I wish Mr. Chapman well in whatever his future endeavors are.”

Mike Norris, Niagara County Republican chairman, said the Legislature will now have a 12-to-3 edge.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Norris said. “We heard the voices (and) we know what we have to do.”

Girls lacrosse changes tactics
With the school district unable to afford bringing them on, the Newfane Panthers Women’s Club lacrosse team will try another way to save their season this spring.
Newfane officials said Tuesday they simply could not add varsity girls lacrosse to the district’s athletic offerings. There are 18 different varsity sports offered in Newfane, but like so many schools throughout the state, the district is facing a grave budget situation.

Politicians want NYPA to appoint Niagara County member
Assembly member John Ceretto, R-Lewiston, has sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo encouraging appointment of a Niagara County resident to one of two open seats on the New York Power Authority board of trustees.
Ceretto’s letter, dated Feb. 15, says the lack of Niagara County representation on the board is “worrisome” and “inequitable.” The board OKs the sale and distribution of hydropower produced at authority-run facilities the Niagara Power Project in Lewiston, NYPA’s biggest money-maker.
“Western New York’s lack of representation on the board of trustees hurts our region’s ability to lower energy costs and limits Niagara County’s control over the creation and utilization of its hydroelectric power,” Ceretto said in a statement about his plea to Cuomo, adding that energy from the Niagara Power Project “should be used to lower power costs in Western New York, which could be the catalyst for an economic renaissance for businesses, while providing families with needed relief from excessive energy rates.”
