Politicians want NYPA to appoint Niagara County member
Assembly member John Ceretto, R-Lewiston, has sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo encouraging appointment of a Niagara County resident to one of two open seats on the New York Power Authority board of trustees.
Ceretto’s letter, dated Feb. 15, says the lack of Niagara County representation on the board is “worrisome” and “inequitable.” The board OKs the sale and distribution of hydropower produced at authority-run facilities the Niagara Power Project in Lewiston, NYPA’s biggest money-maker.
“Western New York’s lack of representation on the board of trustees hurts our region’s ability to lower energy costs and limits Niagara County’s control over the creation and utilization of its hydroelectric power,” Ceretto said in a statement about his plea to Cuomo, adding that energy from the Niagara Power Project “should be used to lower power costs in Western New York, which could be the catalyst for an economic renaissance for businesses, while providing families with needed relief from excessive energy rates.” -
