Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — PENDLETON –– Starpoint Middle School’s entrance is expected to be ready for the start of the school year on Sept. 4, although windows won’t be completed until two weeks after.
Board of Education members approved a contract Monday night with S&W Contracting of Western New York for $200,000, the amount of the bid opened in March. Work will also include replacing the sidewalks, from the beginning of the building overhang to the doors of the school.
In March district officials said the soffit, or the underside of the entrance, was beginning to crack. The cost will be covered from the $1 million left over from the 2007 project.
The addition of the sidewalk work, which will total $8,100 and was not included in the orginial bid of $200,000, was approved as a separate change order Monday night.
Superintendent C. Douglas Whelan said three new pillars were planned to be apart of the entrance, which would have required breaking up some of the current concrete. Since the workers were already there breaking up part of the sidewalk, the thinking was why not replace all of it.
”It’s a good price, they’re there,” Whelan said. “We have to do it, although it does have cracks, it is not unsafe.”
Last November, it was reported to the district bricks were coming loose on the Mapleton Road school’s east entrance. The issue was found in a state-mandated building condition survey, a required inspection school districts must complete for all of their buildings. Water had gotten behind the bricks. Classrooms above the entrance were unaffected.
In other board action, members approved a policy change involving the addition of a time limit for public forums during school board meetings. Policy number 1510, regular board meetings and rules, previously did not have a limit on how long a person could speak or how long the forum could go. The change will put a three minute time limit on each speaker, but the policy still says the board president can enforce or amend the limit at his discretion.
