SCHOOLS: Lockport High School seeks Distinguished Alumni nominees
Lockport High School is looking to honor a new class of graduates who have made some kind of impact after their time as Lions.
For the fourth year, the High School Foundation is accepting nominations for the newest class of Distinguished Alumni. Begun in 2007, the foundation each year selects and recognizes 12 graduates as people who stand out in their field or community. Nominees must meet certain requirements.
“Graduates must have been out of high school for at least 10 years and made significant contributions in their career, community or other humanitarian endeavors,” Principal Frank Movalli said.
Anyone in the Lockport community can nominate a Lockport graduate for the honor. Nominating forms can be picked up at the school, 250 Lincoln Ave., or by calling the office at 478-4452. The forms then can be dropped off or mailed to Movalli at the high school.
The nominations can also be e-mailed to fmovalli@lockport.wnyric.org or the entire process can be done online at the school’s Web site, www.lockportschools.wnyric.org. People can click on the Foundation’s tab on the right of the Web page. From there the form can be sent online or printed out and turned in to the school.
The deadline to nominate a graduate is May 3. The induction ceremony will be held Sept. 2 in the high school auditorium.
The High School Foundation is a private organization that raises money for scholarships and special programs for Lockport students. The idea for the distinguished alumni started when the foundation was putting together a directory for the approximately 30,000 Lockport alumni.
The first class of distinguished alumni was honored in 2007. They included Col. LaVerne Donner, Joseph Whalen, Tom Jolls, Brock Yates, Jane Haenle, Tom Hicks, David Ulrich, Lt. Col. William Gregory, Joel Darling, Capt. David Morgan, Patricia Parete and Joanna Pasceri.
2008’s distinguished alumni included Paul Taylor, Ronald Knight, Kevin Clark, Robert Brown, Flora McKenzie, Sheila DiTullio, James Moran, Mary Brennan-Taylor, Kim Alexis, Louis Surace, Richard Clement and Paul Haenle.
Last year’s alumni included Wayne Secord, James Sacca, John Hall, Wright Ellis, Norman Sinclair, Haldane Mayer, Bruce Williams, Dianne Cross, Augustine DiMillo, James Newton and Ray Betsch.

It's back to school for eastern Niagara students
The times they are a-changing. If there is a common theme for the new school year, that might be it. Roughly 14,000 kids will be heading to school in eastern Niagara County’s six public school districts on Tuesday and Wednesday. And what those students will find is a host of changes awaiting them, some of them related to economic and budget woes.
