Wendelville Fire Co. to get $85,000

PENDLETON — Congresswoman Kathy Hochul today announced a $85,434 grant from the Department of Homeland Security for the Wendelville Volunteer Fire Company.

“This funding will ensure that our first responders have access to the necessary resources to keep the residents of Wendelville safe and secure,” Hochul said. “Our first responders work tirelessly to keep our citizens protected and this program is critical to supporting their efforts.”

The money will be used to purchase new sets of turnout gear, according to Chief Shawn Christman. Forty sets of replacement pants, coats, helmets and gloves are expected in the next two months.

Joel Maerten, the first assistant chief, spearheaded the grant request according to Christman, who became chief in January.

The funding will come from the Assistant to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This coordinated effort is part of a mission to improve the level of preparedness and ability to respond.
