Cops, county plan Super Bowl DWI blitz

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Staff reports

While the best teams from the AFC and NFC square off in the Super Bowl, armed with potent offenses and blitzing defenses, the Lockport Police Department will be preparing for a blitz of their own.

City police officers will conduct a Super Bowl Sunday driving while intoxicated blitz on Feb. 3, Traffic Captain Mike Niethe said Thursday.

The Super Bowl, which will be played in New Orleans, kicks off just before 6:30 p.m. The city DWI blitz begins at 11 p.m.

“We’ll have extra officers out, four officers working five-hour details,” Niethe said. “We’re going to have saturation patrols in the city of Lockport for drunk drivers. We want the highways to be safe. If the people know about it, and if that results in highways being safe, we want people to know about it.”

The extra hours are paid for from special money in the STOP-DWI program fund. That’s money collected from DWI fines.

Every agency in Niagara County will have extra patrols, according to the Capt. Greg Shuey. The Niagara County Sheriff’s Department will also have several units working that weekend, he said.
