Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — NEWFANE — The driver of the car which stuck and killed a bicyclist on July 16 on Transit Road was texting and has been charged by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.
Alicia Westgate, 25, was charged with reckless operation of a motor vehicle, use of a portable electronic device (texting), speeding and failure to use due care.
Richard Webb, 67, was struck and killed while riding on Transit Road between Godfrey and Jockey Roads about noon in Burt. Both the bike and the car were heading southbound.
Westgate had 4-year-old and 3-year-old passengers in car seats in the backseat of the 2005 Malibu. The children were not injured. According to the sheriff's report, Westgate she did not notice the bicyclist. Webb was pronounced dead at the scene.
Members of the Olcott Fire Co. and Miller Hose Fire Co. responded. The accident Investigation Unit; Crime Scene Investigation and Criminal Investigation Unit were dispatched.
Reckless Driving is a misdemeanor. Westgate is due in the Newfane Town Court on Aug. 14.
