LOCKPORT —
About 150 children rolled into their winter break from school with the Presidents All-Day Skate at Skateland.
Teens to toddlers took advantage of unlimited skating and Laser Tag from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some were good enough to master the limbo and other games, while parents helped the younger ones around the hardwood floors.
Students from Albion, Starpoint, Royalton-Hartland and Lockport took advantage of the holiday and the special skating hours.
Jamie Capen of Middleport brought daughters Josephine, 12; Samantha, 8; and Ryleigh, 5. They attend Roy-Hart.
“We were looking for something to do on a day off,” Jamie said. “Our school sent out a flier and we decided to come here. If we submit a coupon, the school earns a dollar.” Skateland’s dollar rebate offer from that flier also benefited participating PTAs.
While Josephine is trying to learn how to skate, she preferred the holiday outing to classes. “Because I don’t like school,” she laughed.
There were five adults and nine children in the party. Friends who work at the Orleans County Correctional Facility got together.
William Lopez of Lockport brought children Brandon, 3, and Sheridan, 6,
Amy Volpe brought her children Jeffrey, Eva and Alivia, who are in the Starpoint school system.
Brian Ferraro, who owns Skateland, said the February special for presidents Washington and Lincoln has been going on for about 25 years. He estimated about 150 kids took part Monday.
One student guessed it was President Obama’s day.
“Monday night is Christian Music Night, but since it’s the Presidents Day holiday, we have all-day skate,” Ferraro said.

Jobless totals drop slightly
Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.
The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.

For the most part, there is a lot of planning that goes into traveling. Some like to handle the details on their own, making arrangements on the phone or using travel websites to book hotels, planes, vehicles and so on.
But lately, working with a travel agent is becoming more popular.
