SOUP KITCHEN: Movie and a meal are double bill on Thursdays

The Thursday night movie was on the minds of many who mingled Tuesday at the Sister Mary Loretto Memorial soup kitchen organized by the Salvation Army on Cottage Street.

“Once a week they play good, wholesome movies for us,” Lockport resident Bill Shaw said. “I assume now that the holidays are coming up, they’ll play some Christmas movies.”

Shaw is right.

Maj. Martha Wheeler, who helps organize events for the soup kitchen, said during this time of year, they like to play not just movies that relate to the holidays, but anything inspirational.

“This year, I think “Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol will be a big hit,” Wheeler said.

Both Wheeler and Director of Volunteers Robert Drinkwater said they get a pretty good response on Thursdays, even though they don’t let people know in advance what’s playing.

“People seem to enjoy it,” Drinkwater said. He added that those who come to the soup kitchen are also allowed to bring in movies they would like to see.

“Those movies sometimes have to be monitored, though,” Wheeler said. “Because it may not always be appropriate for our standards.”

Wheeler said “Golden Girls” is a popular with the seniors who come for coffee in the morning.

“If we don’t have a movie, ‘Golden Girls’ is the first show they’ll request to put on,” she said.

Movie or no movie, Stu Robertson, 56, and his wife, Josie, said coming to the soup kitchen brings them closer to others as they enjoy a hot meal, and “the movie is only an added bonus.”

The soup kitchen serves meals from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, serving about 150 meals a day.

With the kitchen’s annual fundraising drive under way, donations are being accepted now. Donations may be sent by clipping the coupon that appears Monday through Saturday on the front page of the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal. Gifts may be made in honor or memory of a loved one, and the donor’s name, the amount of the donation and the sentiments of the donor will be published. Donors also can remain anonymous.

The donations, along with the completed coupons, can be dropped off at any First Niagara Bank or mailed to First Niagara Bank, 55 East Ave., Lockport, NY 14094. The drive continues until Christmas Eve.
