Lockport police used a Taser on a city man while assisting U.S. Marshals on Friday in their attempt to serve a warrant.
Shawn P. Cotton, 35, was wanted on a Superior Court felony warrant out of Chemung County Court for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender.
Cotton was charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of government administration, according to the police report.
Officer Paul Beakman assisted marshals in the attempt to serve Cotton the warrant at his apartment at 218 Washburn St., Apt. 1.
A police report said the door of Cotton’s residence was unlocked, but someone in the apartment immediately locked it once the suspect heard the agents. Witnesses told police Cotton was in the apartment.
After police tried for 20 minutes to get the suspect to come to the door, agents were authorized to force the apartment door open. Police found Cotton hiding in his bedroom, according to the report.
Cotton reportedly struggled with police, and Beakman said he had to use a Taser on the suspect to make him cooperate.
Cotton was transported to the police department, where the Lockport Fire Rescue team removed the Taser probes from the suspect, the report said.
