NIAGARA FALLS: Air base offers sympathy to Fort Hood victims, families

NIAGARA FALLS — Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station officials expressed sympathy Friday for those affected by the shootings at Fort Hood.

Base officials also said the tragedy has not resulted in any changes to operating procedures at the Falls facility.

“We are all deeply saddened to hear of the events at Fort Hood and the losses suffered by their entire community and family members of the victims,” said Col. Allan Swartzmiller, installation commander and commander of the 914th Airlift Wing. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time,” he said.

Officials said there have been no changes to the security measures at the Falls air base; however, they did say that they routinely monitor potential threats, and force protection conditions are adjusted, as directed by U.S. Northern Command.

Swartzmiller said the Fort Hood tragedy is being treated as an isolated incident and has not affected the air base’s local operating procedures.

“We are routinely vigilant in the security of this installation and continually maintain heightened level of awareness,” Swartzmiller said.

“We will continue to monitor information from Fort Hood as it develops, in conjunction with various federal, state and local agencies, and will respond appropriately to ensure the safety of our members and the local community,” he said.

Palace, Hartland get Greenway funding
The Historic Palace Theatre and the Town of Hartland both were cleared Tuesday to receive Niagara River Greenway funding for improvement projects.

The eight-member Host Communities Standing Committee voted unanimously to approve funding requests of $151,000 for the Palace and $244,000 for Hartland, which is planning a multi-phase town park enhancement project.

Jobless totals drop slightly
Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.

The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.
