ROYALTON — An 80-year-old Royalton man was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center on Monday morning after three, 800-pound bales of hay fell on top of him at Van Buren Farms, 8247 Akron Road, Town of Royalton.
Walter H. Van Buren said the bales fell on him without warning about 10:35 a.m., according to Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies. The bales were stacked on top of each other, about 15 feet to 20 feet high, according to the report.
“He was checking moisture levels of the hay when they came toppling down from the wagon,” Deputy Mark Reele said. A Lockport man was also on the scene and witnessed the accident.
Reele said the man did not sustain any serious injuries. “He was just sent to ECMC for precautionary measures.”
Reele’s report said Van Buren was alert and conscious when the patrol spoke with him, but he complained of leg and back pain.
When the sheriff’s patrol arrived, Van Buren was already being attended to by Wolcottsville Fire Co.’s EMS personnel, according to the report.
A Wolcottsville ambulance transported the victim to an open field across the street from the accident scene, where Mercy Flight landed at 11:04 a.m. to transport the injured man, the report said.
There was no word Monday night on the extent of Van Buren’s injuries.

Former NFTA cop sentenced
A former Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority police officer will spend six years on probation for sending a sexually explicit photo to a teenage girl, a girl he later had a sexual encounter with.
In addition, John W. Ingham will spend 25 weekends in the service of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Work Program. Ingham was sentenced Thursday by State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch, Sr. Ingham will also register as a sex offender. -
Speakers address SPCA contract
Animal rescue volunteers want the City of Lockport to hit the SPCA of Niagara where it hurts — in the pocketbook — and help force reform of the troubled animal welfare organization.
