LOCKPORT —
Six big guns in town battled the bulge for six weeks to see who would be the Downtown Meltdown champions of 2011.
The winner was Gary Chapman, the general manager of Papa Leo’s. Chapman dropped 45 pounds, going from 300 to 255 pounds.
“I feel great, the best I felt in years,” said Chapman. “The last six weeks have been tough, but I feel so much stronger.”
Parker Greenman, the owner of Papa Leo’s, lost 36 pounds. County Clerk Wayne Jagow and county legislator Tony Nemi dropped about 30 pounds each.
Peter Robinson, who guards the door at the court house, lost 25 pounds and hizzoner, Mayor Michael Tucker, lost 20 pounds.
The Lockport Athletic and Fitness Club sponsored the event. For every pound the group lost, LAFC promised to donate $10 to Opportunities Unlimited. The six men lost 188 pounds and the club donated $2,300, according to Amer Abdallah of the fitness center.
The Local Edge provided $2,500 box for a Buffalo Sabres game at the HSBC Arena for 16 people.
Chapman lost 39 pounds last year, but put the weight back on.
“I changed my diet last six weeks,” he said. “It took smaller portions and a lot of will power.”
The dieters also had the services of a personal trainer from the LAFC.

Jobless totals drop slightly
Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.
The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.
