Recycling in Lockport off to a 8-ton start

LOCKPORT — Modern Disposal Service picked up more than 8 tons of recyclable materials from city dwellers in the first two days of its new service.

According to Dawn Timm, the city’s refuse and recycling adviser, Modern crews picked up 4.74 tons of recyclables from half of the properties on the Monday collection route, in the 3rd and 1st Wards, and 3.45 tons from half of the properties on the Tuesday collection route, mostly in the 1st and 5th Wards.

Recyclables are being collected every other week, so half a route is collected at a time.

The first tonnage numbers were a good sign, in Mayor Michael Tucker’s eyes. He said he made a point of driving the streets on the Monday route late Sunday, to see whether people were making use of their new recycling and refuse carts, and was relieved to note it looked like most were.

“Just like that, it flipped,” he said of the overnight change to private from public hauling service. The sight of cart-lined streets “is a cool thing to see. ... I am pleasantly surprised by the number of people who are using their recycling carts already. I think some people were hanging onto their recyclables, waiting for the day. It’s finally here.”

Tucker said he heard a few compliments from property owners Monday afternoon, reporting the new collection program had gone off without a hitch in their neighborhood.

The refuse hotline phone at City Hall is still ringing off the hook, however. Property owners on the Friday collection route still haven’t received their carts, and a lot of the calls coming in are inquiries regarding when those carts will finally be delivered. Likely before Friday, Tucker said.

Calls also are coming in from property owners who want larger or smaller refuse carts than they ordered; some complained they didn’t receive the size or number that they ordered, and in those cases, changeouts are being made promptly, Tucker said.

  • Jobless totals drop slightly

Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.

The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.
