Lockport Union-Sun & Journal —
Emergency personnel planned to be busy through the night into Tuesday afternoon with high winds and the saturated ground expecting to make conditions treacherous in Niagara County.
Winds related to Hurricane Sandy began to pick up around 6 p.m., and the sustained 35 mph winds with gusts up to 55 mph were expected to remain in effect through 2 p.m. today.
The National Weather Service was projecting rainfall between 1.25 to 2.5 inches through Tuesday morning, on top of soaking rain throughout the weekend.
With that in mind, representatives from local law enforcement, government and utilities have advised residents to stay up to date on important information. They have also provided several phone numbers to call if assistance is needed.
The Niagara County Sheriff's Office and Emergency Management Office will be updating the Niagara Sheriff Facebook page on any new information regarding the storm. Alerts regarding the storm can be
found at the New York Alert website (www.nyalert.gov). Sign up for NY alerts at this website to
receive updates. It is the goal of the Sheriff's Office and Emergency Management Office to provide as much pertinent information regarding the storm so that residents may be prepared.
National Grid officials report they have been preparing for Hurricane Sandy since early last week and customers had been advised to take precautions and prepare for the potential for a major storm.
Representatives from New York State Electric & Gas say the sustained 40-mile-per-hour winds and gusts of 60 miles per hour or more are likely to cause serious damage to its electricity delivery system, leaving some customers without power for many days.
