According to a broadcast press conference on YNN, the Town of Lockport has been chosen by Internet giant Yahoo! for a data center. Yahoo! officials say ground will be broken in August with operation to start in May 2010.
The press conference was held in Buffalo with a flood of state and federal officials holding court in a downtown Buffalo office building. Town of Lockport Supervisor Marc Smith was limited to a minute or two of statements, mainly thanking the other officials there for their efforts. Overall, Lockport was mentioned less than a handful of times, with Western New York and New York state used as the umbrella terms for the future location of Yahoo!'s data center.
Town officials have said a town industrial development park is the planned spot for Yahoo! This is all pending public hearings and the normal course of action for new business in any municipality.
Yahoo! officials said at the least, 75 jobs are guaranteed, some entry level, but most with salaries over $50,000.

Jobless totals drop slightly
Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.
The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.
