EXCURSION: Winery plans ‘Twice the Trains’

The Spring Lake Winery is launching “Twice the Trains” for 2009, with the first Vineyard Express excursion train scheduled for June 14.

The excursion trains will run the second and fourth Sunday of each month, through October. The trains are in collaboration with the Medina Railroad Museum, which operates the trains and provides a continental breakfast and museum tour as part of the Vineyard Express experience.

The trip begins in Lockport, where passengers board the train trip to Medina. After their Railroad Museum tour, it’s back on the train for a stopover at Spring Lake Winery, 7373 Rochester Road, where there is lunch and live music by the Carol McLaughlin Big Band. A glass of wine or four tastings is available for $4.

The experience costs $45 for an adult or $20 for children 12 and under.

The winery is located along the Niagara Escarpment, where a spring-fed lake adds to visitor appeal. The winery also has wine tastings and various special events and has become a popular venue for weddings and other private functions.

The winery launched its Premiere Wine Club, the first of its kind in the Niagara Region, this year, as well as a new music-by-the-lake concert series, which will feature two concerts a month. The $20 admission price includes lunch from noon to 4 p.m.

Reservations are suggested at least one month in advance for best availability at either music-by-the-lake or the Vineyard Express excursion train.
