NEWFANE: School district getting new baseball fence
NEWFANE — The Newfane School District is getting a new baseball fence and discus cage.
In the second phase of its capital project, the district has been looking to repair a baseball backstop and fence line near the middle school on Transit Road in Newfane. The new fence would include an overhead barrier on the backstop to keep baseballs from flying out onto the street.
Superintendent Gary Pogorzelski said R.B. Mac Construction had the winning bid at $45,400. Because it is part of the capital project, the actual cost to the district is $3,200.
“It’s 93 percent state aid,” Pogorzelski said.
The board accepted the bid last month. Newfane received four bids for the baseball field fence previously, but the board elected to postpone awarding the contract. The district went back to the bidders and asked if they would use some of the fence material Newfane has left over in storage, which would make the bid less expensive for the district.
Pogorzelski said the board continues to discuss what to do about the ceiling of the Newfane Early Childhood Center, the other half of phase two of the capital project. The NECC was briefly shut down in October when some paint chips fell from the ceiling. Those did not contain lead, but a chip taken right from the beam did contain lead. The district had emergency work done on the ceiling.
The district has three options to consider with the NECC’s ceiling: It could take no additional action, because the emergency work done on the ceiling was enough in the eyes of the state; have the ceiling painted; or add dropped ceilings. The paint that would be used is different from the paint that is on the ceiling now.
The district has about $200,000 left over from the $7.2 million capital project.
In other board news, Pogorzelski said the district will be implementing the recommendations made by Transportation Advisory Services, a school transportation consulting firm. TAS presented its findings in January.
“We will be following up and giving the board a subsequent report,” Pogorzelski said.
Some of the recommendations, such as a new bus-routing software, would take some time to implement. Board President Patrick Kilcullen said there are also some contractual issues that have to be dealt with first that would limit any changes.
