CITY OF LOCKPORT: Arena special permit approved
The Common Council on Wednesday approved issue of a special permit to Lockport Ice Arena & Sports Complex authorizing it to operate at 34 Chestnut St.
The permit was required because the existing zoning on the old Jubilee building doesn’t allow for its use as an arena/recreation center.
LIASC will be the permit holder, according to Mayor Michael Tucker. If the non-profit group’s plans fell through, authority to operate an arena would not be transferred to building owner Benderson Development.
The special use permit was the last document that LIASC needed to include in a revised application to the state Dormitory Authority seeking a $450,000 grant. The money is needed to purchase the building.
In other business Wednesday, Fourth Ward Alderman Pat Schrader, a fire board commissioner, declined to put up a resolution authorizing Fire Chief Tom Passuite to commission a new pumper truck.
The truck that the department wants, with custom features including a wheel base that lets the truck better handle turns on narrow streets, would cost an estimated $600,000. Only one bid was received, by the manufacturer that offers the special wheel base, so aldermen want to quiz Passuite again about necessary-versus-nice features of a truck.
Also, Alderman-at-large Joe Kibler suggested, other local city fire departments should be surveyed about the types of trucks they’re using.

Suspension of casino cash impacts Falls finances
A lengthy casino cash dispute between the Seneca Nation of Indians and New York state could pose some problems for the city’s finances.
City Comptroller Maria Brown said Tuesday the decision by Seneca tribal leaders to suspend casino cash payments to the state is not cause for immediate concern, but could present at least one serious challenge if the two sides remain at odds months from now.
Brown said the city’s 2010 budget relies on 2009 casino cash revenues to cover a debt service increase of roughly $4.5 million. Brown said the city was still awaiting payment for its share of the 2009 casino revenue when Seneca leaders agreed on Monday to withhold future allocations because they felt state-approved gambling operations threatened their Western New York casino operations. - More Local News Headlines
