SHELBY — James R. Ellegate, 44, of Middleport, was killed in a head-on collision about 3 p.m. Saturday on Maple Ridge Road. His two children, who were riding in the back seat of their father’s 1967 Mustang, were injured.
James Jr., 8, and Nicole, 5, were taken to Medina Memorial Hospital, then flown to Women & Children’s Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition about 7 p.m., according to Undersheriff Steve D. Smith of the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department. He said from what hospital officials told him, the injuries did not appear life-threatening.
Smith said a 2001 Chevy Impala, driven eastbound by Harry Kurbs of Lockport, crossed into the opposite lane, striking Ellegate’s vehicle.
Kurbs, 79, and his wife, Mary, 74, were taken to Lockport Memorial Hospital, where they were listed in guarded condition, according to information Smith received about 7 p.m. Saturday.
“We really don’t know what caused Mr. Kurbs to cross into the other lane,” Smith said. Conditions at that hour were clear and the road was dry and a straight stretch, he added.
Smith said the Kurbs’ condition and the opportunity for an interview might help the department gain more insight as to what caused them to travel into Ellegate’s lane.
“How soon we can do that depends on their recovery,” Smith said.
