NEWFANE — A new steakhouse on Lockport-Olcott Road, set to open Nov. 1, suffered another setback on Monday when a fire broke out on the second floor.

Fire crews responded to Del Fuego Steakhouse about 2 p.m. after workers reported seeing smoke on the side of the building.

A worker used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze, and fire crews sprayed the side of the building to be sure the fire was completely out, owner Kevin Stubbs said.

The fire was contained to a wall in an upstairs apartment.

The building suffered some water damage, Stubbs said.

Stubbs said he has suffered several setbacks while renovating the steakhouse, formerly the Rib House.

On Sept. 2, deputies responded to the building in response to a burglary. Stubbs told deputies that someone entered the building and stole an air compressor and an air gun.

The suspects also damaged two toilets, a cash register, a speaker and 15 drinking glasses.

Cash register tape had been thrown across the banquet room, the report said.

In the previous incident, the damages were estimated at $1,050.

Stubbs said the former Rib House had been closed for four years before he began renovating it.

“It was in very bad disrepair,” he said.

The building has been gutted, and crews are working to prepare it for a November opening.

Del Fuego will feature Spanish-American fusion cuisine, Stubbs said.

Palace, Hartland get Greenway funding
The Historic Palace Theatre and the Town of Hartland both were cleared Tuesday to receive Niagara River Greenway funding for improvement projects.

The eight-member Host Communities Standing Committee voted unanimously to approve funding requests of $151,000 for the Palace and $244,000 for Hartland, which is planning a multi-phase town park enhancement project.

Jobless totals drop slightly
Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.

The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.
